The answer is simple, the innocent college students get the flavor of extra cash, running in limousines around Vegas and wearing expensive clothes. What else can be expected?
On weekdays though these students are mere college students, but in weekends, they disguise themselves and take the table bilking casinos out of several thousand dollars.
Ben Campbell was not anything like these persons. He was workaholic person listening to his mother continuous poking that he needs a life. But even when Ben comes face to face with the prospect of studying at Harvard Medical School just paying $300,000 he could restrict himself from the invitation of his team leader and faculty to join the group. The story is based on real life exploitation of MIT students, the movie 21 is a rich entertainment piece on six students hitting the casino clubs to try their luck and be master on it.
Director Robert Luketic has run previous projects like Legally Blonde and the famous win a Date starring Tad Hamilton which is romantic comedies. But now he deviates to a new genre, drama. This is his first adventure in this genre, but it feels he has been influenced a lot by previous movies like this.
There are various movies similar but Luketic has used the information for his benefit. The strengths of elements like gambling and drama has been always there but it has never influenced Luketic to deviate from his true story and his message through the film. The second part of the movie has splendid star cast. With Spacey and Burgess, the movie has the necessary elements. Though the movie fails to play much in drama department, the emotional touch is always there. The romantic story between Ben and Jill were also not missed
The major difficulty of the movie is the timing. Though Luketic has the gift of actors giving their best in short takes, a cameo of Bruce Campbell alike, the move started with a clear good pace. It seems the director knows just what to do. However as time passes and the movie flows, the blood pressure sinks in making the movie a huge bore.
The movie was long enough not giving much entertainment as promised. Love of money can be the root cause for all evil. That's the theme of the movie, though not much successful in depicting due to several plot shifts, the movie is downright entertainment.
